This step by step diy woodworking project is about wood bookcase plans. If you want to learn more about building a wood bookcase, we recommend you to pay attention to the instructions described in the article. Work with good judgement and don’t forget to take a look over the related plans, as there are so many bookcase designs to choose from, that are featured on our site.

Before starting the actual construction project, we recommend you to plan everything, as to save money and to keep the costs under control. Adjust the size and the design of the bookcase to suit your needs. In addition, we recommend you to invest in high-quality materials, such as pine, redwood or cedar, as they have a nice finish and are highly durable, especially in a humid environment.

If you don’t have a rich expertise in woodworking field, you should ask a friend to give you a hand with the project. There are many things that you could go wrong, so make sure you plan everything and invest in quality materials. Select the lumber with attention, making sure the components are perfectly straight and in a very good condition. Use a carpentry square to check if the corners are right-angled. Building the frame of the bookcase

Building the frame of the bookcase

The first step of the project is to build the frame of the bookcase. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to cut the components for the frame of the bookcase out of 1/2″ plywood. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the vertical components and secure them to the perpendicular components with 1 1/4″ screws.

Smart Tip: Add waterproof glue to the joints in order to create a rigid structure.

Fitting the back of the case

Fitting the back of the case

Cut a piece of 1/2″ plywood to the dimensions described in the article and fit it inside the frame of the bookcase. Drill pocket holes along the four edges of the plywood piece and secure it to the frame with 1 1/4″ galvanized screws. Leave no gaps between the components and make sure the surface is perfectly even.

Building the partitions

Building the partitions

Continue the woodworking project by making the partitions for the bookcase out of 1/2″ plywood. Mark the cut edges on the pieces of plywood and get the job done with a circular saw. Remove the excess materials with a chisel and smooth the recesses with sandpaper. Take accurate measurements, otherwise the components won’t lock together properly. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the components.

Fitting the shelves

Fitting the shelves

Fit the partitions inside the frame of the bookcase, making sure there are no gaps between the components and the corners are square. Insert screws through the pocket holes placed at both ends of the components into the frame of the bookcase.

Smart Tip: Align the edges with attention, making sure they are perfectly flush.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the bookcase.
