This step by step diy woodworking project is about wall shelves plans. If you want to store your books and other items properly we recommend you to consider building wall shelves. Nevertheless, you should know there are a lot of designs to choose from when building the wall shelves so make sure you select the right plans for your needs and budget. Moreover, adjust the size of the wall shelves to suit your needs.
From our experience we recommend you to invest in high quality materials, especially if you want to keep the wall shelves for many years in a row. Generally speaking, cedar, pine or redwood are great choices as they combine the convenience of a great natural finish with the benefits of a good durability. Mark the cut lines on the slats before adjusting the components at the right size.

Building wall shelves
Â
The first step of the project is to build the wall support. Therefore, we recommend you to build the components from 1×3 lumber, as shown in the image. Don’t forget that you could easily adjust the size of the support to suit your needs. Make sure the corners are right-angled before driving the screws into the slats. Fit 1/2″ plywood between the slats to create even gaps between the back boards.
Â
Â
Afterwards, we recommend you to build the shelves supports out of 1×6 lumber. If you want to get a professional result we recommend you to mark the cut lines with a pencil and to get the job done with a jigsaw. Smooth the cut edges with medium-grit sandpaper.
Â
Â
Attaching the supports to the wooden panel is not difficult, but you should make sure you take accurate measurements. In addition, use a spirit level to plumb the supports and to check if they are perfectly horizontal. Add waterproof beside inserting the screws, in order to create rigid bonds.
Â
Â
One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to attach the 1×6 shelves to the supports and to lock them into place with finishing nails. Make sure you smooth the cut edges and you align the wooden pieces at both ends before inserting the screws.
Â
Â
Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.
Smart tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the shelves. Attach the supports to the wall and secure the shelves into place with screws.
