Building the frame of the cabinet

Building the frame of the cabinet

The first step of the project is to build the frame of the storage cabinet. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the sides out of 3/4″ plywood and the bottom supports out of 1×3 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and secure them to the side using 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth, after making sure the corners are square.

Assembling the storage cabinet

Assembling the storage cabinet

Continue the project by fitting the top and the bottom components to the tower cabinet. Drill pocket holes along the four edges of the bottom component and secure them to the frame using 1 1/4″ screws and waterproof glue. Make sure the corners are square and leave no gaps between the components. Drill pocket holes along the top of the side components and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the top component. Make sure the corners are square and the edges are perfectly flush.

Attaching the back

Next, fit the 3/4″ plywood piece to the back of the cabinet. Drill pocket holes along the four edges and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the frame of the cabinet. Add glue to the joints and make sure the edges are flush. Remove the excess material with a damp cloth.

Fitting the shelves

Fitting the shelves

Cut the shelves out of 3/4″ plywood and smooth the edges with sandpaper. Drill pocket holes along the back and the sides before fitting them to the tower cabinet. Use a spirit level to make sure the shelves are horizontal before inserting 1 1/4″ screws. Place the shelves equally-spaced for a professional result.

Fitting the door

Fitting the door

Build the door out of 3/4″ plywood and attach a handle that matches the style of the rest of the furniture. Fit the door to the front opening and secure it into place using metal hinges. Leave a gap of 1/8″ around the door and make sure it opens and closes properly.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues. Attach caster wheels to the legs of the coffee table.
