This step by step diy woodworking project storage bench plans. If you are looking for building plans for a simple storage bench, you should take a close look over the instructions described in this article. Gather all the tools and materials to your workshop before starting the actual construction, in order to save both time and money. Plan every step of the project from the very beginning and ask a skilled friend to give you a hand.

If you want to learn more about how to build wooden benches, we recommend you to pay attention to the seating section of our site. There are so many designs and plans to choose from, that it is really hard to take a proper decision from the very beginning.

Don’t forget to invest in high quality materials, such as pine, cedar or redwood, as they have both a beautiful finish and are highly durable. It is essential to select the materials with good judgement, as the slats should be perfectly straight and in a very good visual condition. Look for knots, chips, bows or any other flaws. Use professional tools to adjust the size of the components. See all my Premium Plans in the Shop.

Building the legs of the bench

Building the legs of the bench

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the legs of the storage bench. In order to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to select perfectly straight 1×12 slats and to adjust their size and shape as in the plans. Use a circular saw to make the straight cuts and a jigsaw to make the curved cuts. Smooth the cut edges with a piece of sandpaper.

Attaching the seat

Attaching the seat

Continue the project by attaching wooden seat. Drill pocket holes at the top of the legs by using a pocket hole jig (3-4 holes on each leg). Align the components with great care, making sure the corners are right-angled. Add waterproof glue to the joints, if you want to enhance the rigidity of the structure.

Fitting the shelves

Fitting the shelves

In order to add storage space to the wooden bench, you need to attach the shelves. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the shelves and secure them to the legs with 1 1/4″ galvanized screws, after making sure they are perfectly level. Fitting the partition will keep the structure rigid, so make sure you don’t overlook this step. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the partition and insert screws into the shelves to secure it into place.

Attaching the trims

One of the last steps of the project is to fit decorative trims to both ends of the seat and to lock them into place with finishing nails. Make the ends of the trims round by using a jigsaw before attaching them into place. Add glue to the joints to enhance the bond of the structure.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the bench.
