Building a shoe storage

Building the frame of the shoe storage

Building the frame of the shoe storage

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame of the shoe storage. Therefore, cut the components out of 3/4″ plywood, making sure you take accurate measurements. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal components and secure them to the sides with 1 1/4″ screws. Make sure the corners are right angled before inserting the screws into place. Add waterproof glue to enhance the rigidity of the structure.

Building the shelves

Building the shelves

Continue the project by making the shelves and the partitions for the shoe storage. In order to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to mark the cut lines on the plywood pieces and make the notches using a circular saw. Remove the excess material with a chisel and smooth the edges with sandpaper. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the components.

Fitting the shelves

Fitting the shelves

Fit the shelves inside the frame of the shoe rack and secure them to the side walls with galvanized screws. Make sure the corners are right-angled and add glue to the joints to reinforce the bond of the components. Next, fit the partitions into place and secure them to the bottom and top components with 1 1/4″ screws. Tap the partitions with a mallet in order to make sure they are flush with the shelves.

Attaching the back

Attaching the back

Continue project by attaching the 1/4″ plywood to the back of the structure. Drill pilot holes through the plywood and secure it to the frame with galvanized screws. Leave no gaps between the components and add glue to enhance the rigidity of the frame.

Building the front trim

Build the bottom and top trims using the pattern described in the diagram. Cut both ends of the front trims at 45 degrees and make the curved cuts with a jigsaw. Smooth the edges with sandpaper and remove the residues with a cleaner.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the shoe storage.
