This step by step diy woodworking project about rocket bookcase plans. If you want to build a nice bookcase for your kids, we recommend you to invest in high quality materials and to select the most appropriate plans and design for your needs and budget. Don’t forget that you should adjust the size and the shape of the rocket bookcase to fit in a corner of the bedroom or to store more items.
This project has an average difficulty, so if you have the basic woodworking skills, you can get the job done easily in just a few days. Work with attention and plan every step of the project from the very beginning. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the components before inserting the screws, in order to prevent the wood from splitting. In addition, check if the corners are right-angled by using a carpentry square.
Add glue to the joints and clamp the components for a few hours, in order to create a rigid structure. After filling the holes with wood putty and smoothing the surface with medium-grit sandpaper, we recommend you to decorate the rocket bookcase with a few coats of paint. Use you imagination and creativity to make an unique design for the rocket bookcase and to impress your kids. See all my Premium Plans in the Shop.

Building a rocket bookcase
Â
The first step of the project is to build the frame of the bookcase. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to use 1×12 boards and to lock them together with 1 1/4″ pocket screws. Drill several pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal components and insert the screws into the sides, after making sure the corners are right-angled. Place a spirit level on top of the shelves to check if they are horizontal.
Â
Â
Adding a nice trim to the bottom of the rocket bookcase is a great idea, as it will enhance the look of the project. Cut a small piece inside the wooden piece, in order to to create a nice effect and secure it into place with pocket screw.
Â
Â
Attach the top shelf to the frame, as in the image. Drill pocket holes at the top of the side components and insert the screws into the shelf, as shown in the image. Align the components at both ends before driving the screws in.
Â
Â
Continue the woodworking project by attaching the roofing components to the base. Cut one end of the components at 45 degrees and secure them together with finishing nails. Pre-drill the lumber before inserting the finishing nails. Add glue to increase the bond of the components.
Â
Â
If you want to follow the theme of the bookcase, you could easily add wooden wings to both sides of the construction. Cut the components out of a piece of 1×6 lumber, using the pattern shown in the diagram.
Â
Â
Attach a piece of 1/4″ or 1/2″ plywood to the back of the bookcase. Align the piece of plywood at both ends and lock it into place with finishing nails.
Â
Â
Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.
