Building the frames

Building the frames

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame of the benches. In order to get a professional manner, we recommend you to cut the components out of 1×16 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the vertical components, align them with great care and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the top and bottom components. Make sure the corners are square and add waterproof glue to the joints.

Attaching the trims

Attaching the trims

Continue the project by attaching the trims to the faces of the storage units. As you can easily notice in the image, we recommend you to cut the horizontal components out of 1×3 lumber and the vertical components out of 1×2 lumber. Lock the trims together and secure them to the frame of the bench using 1 1/4″ screws and glue.

Building the partitions

Building the partitions

The nest step of the project is to build the vertical supports for the mudroom bench. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to mark the cut lines on the 1×14 pieces of lumber and to get the job done using a nice jigsaw. Smooth the curved cuts using fine-grit sandpaper. Repeat the process for the rest of the vertical supports.

Fitting the partitions

Fitting the partitions

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the vertical supports and lock them to the bottom and to the top storage units, by using 1 1/4″ screws and waterproof glue. Make sure the corners are square before inserting the screws.

Fitting the supports

Fitting the supports

One of the last steps of the project is to fit the horizontal supports to the mudroom bench. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to locate the studs before fitting the support into place. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the 1×4 slats and secure them to the vertical supports. Afterwards, drill pilot holes and secure the supports to the studs by inserting galvanized screws.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the bench.
