Before starting the actual construction project, we recommend you to plan everything, as to save money and to keep the costs under control. Adjust the size and the design of the end table to suit your needs. In addition, we recommend you to invest in high-quality materials, such as pine, redwood or cedar, as they have a nice finish and are highly durable, especially in a humid environment.

If you don’t have a rich expertise in woodworking field, you should ask a friend to give you a hand with the project. There are many things that you could go wrong, so make sure you plan everything and invest in quality materials. Select the lumber with attention, making sure the components are perfectly straight and in a very good condition. Use a carpentry square to check if the corners are right-angled. Building an end table

Building the corner legs

Building the corner legs

The first step of the project is to build the four corner legs of the modern end table. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to use 1×3 lumber, making sure you adjust the size of the adjacent slat at 1 3/4″, by using a circular saw. Drill pocket holes along the edges of the narrow components and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the perpendicular slat. Add waterproof glue to the joint, in order to enhance the bond of the structure.

Fitting the frame components

The next step of the woodworking project is to attach the aprons to the corner legs. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and insert 1 1/4′ screws into the legs, after making sure the corners are right-angled. Leave no gaps between the components and add glue to enhance the bond of the slats.

Fitting the cleats

Fitting the cleats

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to attach the 1×1 lumber cleats to the interior of the frame, as shown in the plans. Cut the components at the right size and secure them into place with 1 1/4″ galvanized screws. Add waterproof glue to the joints, in order to enhance the bond. Leave about 1/4″ from the top edges of the horizontal supports or adjust the distance if the glass is thicket than 1/4″.

Fitting the glass

Cut the pieces of plexiglass to the dimensions described in the plans and fit it into place, leaving no gaps between the frame of the end table and the pieces of glass.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the end table.
