How to build a loft bed with desk

Building the second storage unit

Building the second storage unit

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the small storage unit for the desk. As you can see in the diagram, you need to build the components out of 3/$” plywood. Mark the cut lines on the plywood sheet and get the job done with a circular saw. Smooth the cut edges and drill pocket holes along the sides of the horizontal components.

Smart Tip: Secure the shelves to the side units using 1 1/4″ screws and glue.

Assembling the storage unit

Assembling the storage unit

Build the other storage unit, using the above diagram. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal shelves. Fit the components to the sides and secure them into place using 1 1/4″ screws. Make sure the corners are square and leave no gaps between the components. Align the components with great care, making sure the edges are flush.

Cut a piece of 1/4″ plywood and attach it to the back of the storage unit. Use brad nails to secure the panel to the storage unit. Leave no gaps between the components and make sure the edges are perfectly flush. Add glue to the joints to enhance the bond of the components.

The next step of the project is to attach the tabletop to the structure. Build the tabletop out of 3/4″ plywood at the right size. Fit the storage units to the plywood piece and align the edges. Drill pilot holes through the top of the storage units and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the tabletop. Add glue to the joints and leave no gaps between the components.

Fitting the caster wheels

Fitting the caster wheels

One of the last step of the project is to attach the caster wheels to the desk. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to fit the caster wheels to the corners of the storage units. Align everything with great care and lock them into place using galvanized screws. In our example we have used 2″caster wheels. The actual height of the wheels is 3″.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. In order to get a professional result, fill the holes and the gaps with wood filler and let it dry out for a few hours.  Check if there are protruding screws and fix this issue, if necessary. You can move the desk under and near the bed frame easily.

Smart Tip: Apply a few coats of stain or exterior paint to the components, in order to protect them from decay and water damage. Check out the rest of the furniture plans featured on our website.
