This step by step woodworking project is about kids rocking chair plans. If have designed this simple rocking chair so you can build one for your kids in less than one day. This project requires basic materials, so you can get the job done with materials you can buy from the local DIY store. The plans come with step by step instructions and you can easily adjust all the dimensions to suit your needs. See my other DIY projects HERE.
We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Drill pilot holes trough the components before inserting the wood screws, to prevent the wood from splitting. See all my Premium Plans in the Shop.

How to build a kids rocking chair
The first step of the project is to assemble the seat frame. Cut the components from 1×3 lumber at the dimensions described in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the 11″ long slats and insert 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints and make sure the edges are flush.
Build the legs from 1×3 lumber. Mark the cut lines and get the job done in a professional manner with a saw. Smooth the edges with sandpaper.
Attach the legs to the seat frame. Use a spirit level to plumb the legs and make sure the corners are right-angled. Add glue to the joints and leave no gaps between the components. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 1/4″ screws.
Build the rockers for the kids chair from 1×4 lumber. Mark the cut lines and get the job done with a jigsaw. Smooth the edges with sandpaper.
Fit the rockers to the bottom of the chair. Drill pocket holes through the bottom of the legs and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the rockers. Add glue and make sure there are no gaps.
Fit decorative 1×3 trims to the sides of the chair. Use glue and screws to secure the trims into place. Make sure you insert the screws from the inside towards to exterior, so you hide the head of the screws.
Attach 1×3 slats to the seat of the chair. Drill pilot holes at both ends of the slats and secure them into place with 1 1/4″ screws. Countersink the head of the screws for a neat result.
Use 1×3 slats for the backrest. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the slats and secure them to the back legs with 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints for a durable bond.
Fill the holes with wood putty and then smooth the components with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of paint or stain to enhance the look of the chair and to protect it from decay.
This kids chair is a straight forward project one can build in a few hours using common materials and tools. If you like the design you can build one cheap and quik. If you like my project, don’t forget to SHARE it on Facebook and Pinterest.
