If you want to learn more about building a basic kids table, we strongly suggest you to pay attention to the instructions described in the article. There are so many plans and projects to choose from when building a table for your kids, that you really need to take some time and consider several alternatives.

Before starting the actual construction project, we recommend you to plan everything, as to save money and to keep the costs under control. Adjust the size and the design of the activity table to suit your needs. In addition, we recommend you to invest in high-quality materials, such as pine, redwood or cedar, as they have a nice finish and are highly durable, especially in a humid environment.

If you don’t have a rich expertise in woodworking field, you should ask a friend to give you a hand with the project. Building the frame of the table

Building the frame of the table

The first step of the woodworking project is about building the frame of the table. In order to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to cut the 1×4 slats at the right dimensions. Check if the corners are right-angled before locking the components together. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the short components and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the side slats.

Attaching the legs

Attaching the legs

Next, we recommend you to attach the legs to the frame of the table. In order to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to cut both ends of the 24″ slats at 5 degrees, by using a circular saw with a sharp blade. Smooth the cut edges before attaching the legs to the frame.

Smart Tip: Align the components with attention, drill pilot hole through the frame of the table and insert 1 1/4″ screws, from the interior, into the legs. Add waterproof glue to the joints, in order to create a rigid structure.

Fitting the tabletop

Fitting the tabletop

Cut a piece of 3/4″ plywood or MDF to the dimensions shown in the diagram and center the frame of the table to it. Lay all the components on a level surface, otherwise the end result won’t be as accurate as expected. Drill pocket holes through the aprons and insert screws into the tabletop, making sure you leave no gaps between the components.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the kids table.
