Building the back legs

Building the back legs

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the back legs for the indoor bench. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to mark the cut lines on the 2×4 slats and to make the cuts with a good circular saw. Smooth the cut edges with sandpaper and remove the residues with a vacuum cleaner.

Building the sides of the bench

Next, you need to build the sides of the bench. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the components and secure them to the legs using 2 1/2′ screws. Work with attention and make sure you leave no gaps between the components. Add waterproof glue to the joints in order to enhance the rigidity of the structure.

Fitting the seat supports

Fitting the seat supports

Continue the project by locking the sides of the bench together, using the information described in the plans. Make sure the corners are right-angled before inserting the screws into place. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and secure them to the legs legs with 2 1/2″ screws. Use a spirit level to make sure the supports are perfectly horizontal.

Fitting the stretcher

Fitting the stretcher

In order to add strength to the indoor bench, we recommend you to fit a 2×2 stretcher to the bottom of the bench. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the stretcher before attaching it to the braces. Make sure the corners are right-angled and leave no gaps between the components.

Fitting the backrest

Fitting the backrest

Building the backrest for the bench can be done in several ways, but you need to make sure the design matches the style of the room. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and secure them to the legs with galvanized screws. Continue the project by fitting the rails. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the rails and place them equally-spaced before locking them into place with screws. Add waterproof glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth.

Attaching the seat

Cut the seat out of a piece of 3/4″ plywood, making sure you pay attention to the instructions described in the diagram. Mark the cut lines on the piece of plywood with a pencil and get the job done with a nice circular saw. Drill pilot holes through the seat supports and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the seat.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the bench.
