This step by step diy project is about how to build a vanity. Building a bathroom vanity cabinet is a straight forward job, as you just need to cut a few boards and lock them together tightly. From our experience, we recommend you to choose the sink and countertop you are going to use, from the very beginning. In this manner, you could adjust the size of the vanity as to fit your needs.

In order to get strong joints and to fit the head of the screws, we recommend you to use a pocket hole system. Therefore, drill pocket holes at both ends of the components and drive in 1 1/4” screws. In addition, don’t forget to add wood glue to the edges of the components, in order to enhance the rigidity of the frame. Use finishing nails and glue to secure the 1×2 (1/4” thick) trims into place.

Buy the best quality materials you could afford,if you want to build a durable vanity. Therefore, pine or MDF are great choices, provided you check the components with great attention. As a general rule all the slats and boards should be in a good condition and perfectly straight. On the other hand, you could add several shelves or partitions inside the cabinet, as to use the space efficiently. See all my Premium Plans in the Shop.

Building the frame of the vanity

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame of the vanity. As you can see in the image, you need to use 1×18 lumber or MDF. Drill 4 pocket holes at both ends of the bottom shelf, using a proper jig.

Place the components between the side faces, making sure the corners are right-angled. Add wood glue to the edges of the shelf and drive in the 1 1/4” screws.

Installing the supports

Next, you need to place 1×3 supports between the side walls of the vanity, in order to enhance the rigidity of the structure. As you can notice in the plans, you should drill pocket holes and insert 1 1/4” screws.

Use a spirit level to check if the supports are perfectly level. In addition, add glue to the edges of the supports, as to enhance the bond of the joints. You could adjust the size of the vanity, according to your needs and tastes.

Installing the aprons

Installing the aprons

Continue the project by installing the aprons, both to the bottom and to the top of the vanity. As you can see in the image, you need to fit 1×6 wooden boards to the front face of the cabinet. Make sure the top edges are flush with the cabinet, before adding finishing nails and adding glue.

Smart Tip: Add 1×2 (1/4” thick) trims to the aprons, as in the image, as to enhance the look of the vanity.

Building the doors

Building the doors

Building the doors of the cabinet is a straight-forward job, if the right materials and tools are used. You could build the doors out of 1×14 lumber (adjust it to 12” using a circular saw) or MDF. Attach 1×2 trims (1/4” thick) to the doors, using glue and 1 1/4” finishing nails.

Smart Tip: Fit the doors into place and secure them to the side components with cabinet hinges. Make sure thy open properly, before going to the next step.

Last but not least, there are a few finishing touches you have to take care of. In order to get the job done as a professional, you need to fill the holes and the gaps with wood putty. After it dries out, sand the surface with 120-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Cover the wooden components with a few coats of stain before fitting the counter-top and the sink. If you want to get this plan as a PDF file, please take a look over the GET PDF PLANS button bellow. Thank you for the support!
