This step by step diy project is about how to build a tv stand. Building a tv stand is a complex project, but anyone can get the job done by using professional plans and quality materials. Don’t forget that you should adjust the dimensions of the stand to your tastes and add a few finishing touches, as to match the style of the rest of the furniture. Adding the doors to the table will add an exquisite look to your project, but it requires complex skills.

When building a wooden stand for your tv you should know there are many designs you could choose from. Therefore, take a look over several projects and adjust the design of the table before starting the actual construction. You might want to add several extra shelves or not to build the door for the small table. Irrespective of your choice, we recommend you to plan everything form the very beginning.

It is essential to select the lumber with attention when building the tv stand, especially if you want to get a professional result. Therefore, choose perfectly straight boards and look for any flaws, such as knots or cracks. In addition, buy high quality lumber (such as pine), if yo want to get a nice finish and to build a tv stand that will last for many years in a row. Fill all the cavities with putty and sand the surface with medium and fine grit sandpaper. See all my Premium Plans in the Shop.

How to build a tv stand

Building the frame of the tv stand

Building the frame of the tv stand

The first step of the project is to build the frame of the tv stand. As you can see in the image, we recommend you to build the components from 1×20 lumber and to lock them together with pocket screws. Drill the pocket holes at both ends of the side components and insert 1 1/4″ screws. Alternatively, drill regular pilot holes through the horizontal components and insert the screws into the sides.

Top Tip: Add glue to the joints, in order to enhance the bond of the frame. Check if the corners are right-angled, by using a carpentry square. Make sure the edges are flush, before inserting the screws.

Attaching the shelf

The next step of the project is to install the shelves inside the frame. In order to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to use 1×18 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the board and lock it to the side walls with 1 1/4″ galvanized screws. Adjust the height at which you place the shelf to suit your needs. Align the shelf to the back edges of the frame.

Attaching the plywood back

Continue the woodworking project by attaching the back of the tv stand. Therefore, use 1/4″ plywood to build the back of the wall and attach it to the frame with 5/8″ finishing nails. Check if the corners are square and add glue to the joints. Align the edges with great care before inserting the brad nails.

Installing the wooden legs

Installing the wooden legs

In order to enhance the look of the tv stand, we recommend you to build four legs from 2×2 or 3×3 lumber and to attach them to the frame, using the information from the plans. Drill pocket holes through the legs and secure them to the bottom of the TV stand using 1 1/4″ screws.

Top Tip: Recess the legs 1/2″ from the exterior edges of the component, to add character. Add glue to get the job done in a professional manner.

Building the doors

One of the last steps is to build the doors for the tv stand. Build the frames from 1×2 lumber and lock them together with pocket screws. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the vertical components and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the perpendicular components.

Top Tip: Make sure the edges are aligned and the corners square. Use a router to make 1×4″x1/4″ rabbets to the inside of the frames.

Last but not least, you need  to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the holes with wood putty and let it dry out for several hours. Smooth the surface with medium-grit sandpaper and clean the surface with a dry cloth.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the tv stand.
