This step by step diy woodworking project is about how to build a spa bench. If you want to build a nice bench for your spa, we recommend you to pay attention to the instructions described in this article. Therefore, we recommend you to work with attention and to adjust the size and the designs of the bench to suit your needs. In addition, we suggest you to take a look over the rest of the related project, if you want several options before starting the actual construction.

If you don’t have an extensive expertise in woodworking we recommend you to ask a skilled friend to give you a hand with this project. Choosing the materials for the project is a tough challenge, especially if you have a significant budget. Generally speaking, you should invest in weather-resistant lumber such as pine, cedar or redwood, after checking if the slats are in a good condition and perfectly straight.

Making the joints is maybe the hardest part of the project but if you use proper tools the end result will be professional and highly durable. From our experience we recommend you to drill pocket holes through the components and and to insert 1 1/4″ galvanized screws. Moreover, add waterproof glue to the joints if you want to get the job done in a professional manner. See all my Premium Plans in the Shop.

Building the frame of the bench

Building the frame of the bench

The first step of the project is to build the frame of the spa bench. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to assemble the frame using 1×10 lumber.

Smart Tip: Check if the corners are right-angled by using a carpentry square. Drill pilot holes through the sides of the bench and insert screws into the bottom of the bench.

Fitting the supports

Fitting the supports

The next step of the project is to attach the 2×2 supports between the sides of the bench, as shown in the image. Cut the supports at the right size and lock them into place with galvanized screws. Make sure you plumb the sides of the bench and check if the supports are perfectly horizontal.

Attaching the trims

Attaching the trims

Next, you should attach the trims to the front and to the back of the spa bench. As you can see in the image, you have to fit 1×2 trims to the sides of the bench and 1×3 trims to the top and to the bottom of the bench. Use finishing nails and waterproof glue to lock the trims into place after aligning them at both ends.

Fitting the seat components

Fitting the seat components

One of the last steps of the project is to attach the seat to the wooden bench. As you can see in the plans, we recommend you to assemble the seat on a level surface before attaching it to the frame. Make sure the slats are equally spaced and the top is tightly locked together.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the lap bookshelf.
