How to build a round table

This step by step diy project is about how to build a round table. Building a round table is easy and it will enhance the look of your backyard with a exquisite project. Even if you have an average expertise in woodworking you can get the job done by yourself, as this project requires basic woodworking skills. Don’t forget to take a look over the rest of the woodworking projects, as to find exactly what you need.

A round table can be used both indoor and as a picnic table, so you should adjust the design to your needs. You should always plan everything form the very beginning and to adjust the size of the table to your needs, while you can still use the woodworking techniques described in this project. Mark the cut lines on the slats before making the round tabletop and use a jigsaw to get the job done.

There are a few tips that you should take into account, if you want to get a professional result. Therefore, take accurate measurements and use professional tool when making the cuts or when drilling pilot holes. Align the components at both ends and add waterproof glue to the joints, if you want to create a rigid structure. Round the exposed edges with sandpaper or by using a good router. Building the base of the table

Building the base of the table

The first step of the project is to build the base of the round table. As you can notice in the image, you need to assemble the components using waterproof glue and pocket screws. Drill the pilot holes, align them at both ends and insert the screws. Make sure the corners are right-angled and place the frame on small pieces of 1×2 lumber, in order to protect it form water damage and moisture.

The next step of the woodworking project is to attach the 4×4 legs to the base, as in the plans. Plumb the posts with a spirit level before drilling pilot holes and inserting the galvanized screws. Don’t forget that you should adjust the size of the legs to your needs.

Building the round tabletop

Building the round tabletop is maybe one of the most complex step of the project. as you need to mark accurate guidance lines. Place the slats on a level surface and mark the center of the  square. Fit a 24″ long slat to the center of the tabletop and mark the circle with the opposite end. Afterwards, use a jigsaw with a sharp blade to get the job done in a professional manner.

After cutting the slats as in the image, we recommend you to lock them together with waterproof glue and to clamp them together tightly with several C-clamps. Attach several slats to the  slats as in the image. While the yellow components should be made out of 2×4 lumber, the green components should be made out of 1×4 lumber.

Smart Tip: Place the slats to the tabletop and lock them into place with waterproof glue and galvanized screws (1 1/4″ screws for the 1×4 slats and 2″  for the 2×4 slats).

Attaching the legs

After the glue has dried out, you need to attach the legs to the tabletop. Place the base of the table on top of the frame, as in the plans, drill pilot holes and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the frame. Make sure the legs are plumb, by using a spirit level, otherwise the ends result might not suit your tastes.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. In order to get a professional result, fill the holes and the gaps with wood filler and let it dry out for a few hours.  Check if there are protruding screws and fix this issue, if necessary.

Smart Tip: Apply a few coats of stain or exterior paint to the components, in order to protect them from decay and water damage. Place the table on a concrete slab and seal the base legs of the table, if you want to protect them from decay and water damage.
