Before starting the actual construction project, we recommend you to plan everything, as to save money and to keep the costs under control. Adjust the size and the design of the media console to suit your needs. In addition, we recommend you to invest in high-quality materials, such as pine, redwood or cedar, as they have a nice finish and are highly durable, especially in a humid environment.
It is essential to invest in high quality materials, that are also water-resistant, such as pressure-treated lumber. Cut the components at the right size by using a circular saw and smooth the cut edges with a sand block. Don’t forget to ask a skilled friend to assist you during the project, especially if you don’t have a large expertise in the field. You need someone to hold the components into place, while you drive the screws in.

Building a media console
Â
First of all, we recommend you to build the frame for the media console. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to build the components out of 3/4″ plywood. Cut the components at the right size and smooth the edges with fine-grit sandpaper. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal shelves and secure them to the vertical components by inserting 1 1/4″ screws. Make sure the corners are square and leave no gaps between the components.
Â
Â
Build the bottom trim out of 1×3 lumber and the rest of the trims out of 1×2 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the vertical trims and secure them to the horizontal trims by inserting 1 1/4″ screws. Make sure the corners are square and leave no gaps between the components.
Â
Â
Build the top out of 3/4″ plywood. Fit the top component into place, making sure the edges are perfectly flush. Drill pocket holes along the top edges of the side components and insert 1 1/4″ screws. Alternatively, you could drill pilot holes through the top component and insert finishing nails into the vertical components. Build the trim out of 1×2 lumber and fit it to the front face of the media console. Drill pocket holes along the trim and secure it to the top component by using 1 1/4′ screws. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess using a damp cloth.
Â
Â
Build the back out of 1/4″ plywood. Align the plywood at all edges and secure it to the structure using finishing nails and glue.
Â
Â
Build the door frames out of 1×3 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the vertical components and secure them to the horizontal components using 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints and leave no gaps between the components. Use a router to make 1/4″x1/4″ rabbets to the components, as described in the diagram.
Â
Â
Cut the glass panel at the right size and secure it to the frame by using clips. Make sure the edges are flush before fitting the clips to the door frames.
Â
Â
Fit the doors to the openings and make sure there is a 1/8″ gap around the frame. Use appropriate door hinges to secure them to the media console. Install door handles that match the style of the woodworking project,.
Â
Â
Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Check out the rest of the parts of the woodworking project, to learn more about building the storage units and the top hutch.
