Building a corner bench

Building the sides of the bench

Building the sides of the bench

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the sides of the bench. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the components out of 2×4 lumber. Cut the ends of the legs at 80 degrees. Build the brace, drill pocket holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to the legs. Add glue to the joints and leave no gaps between the components. Fit the 2×4 top to the support by using 2 1/2″ screws, after drilling pilot holes.

Building the middle support

Building the middle support

Building the middle support is a straight-forward process, as you don’t need to make angle cuts. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the bottom brace and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the 2×4 legs. Drill pilot holes through the top support and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the legs. Add glue to the joint and make sure the corners are right-angled.

Fiting the bottom supports

Cut the ends of the bottom stretchers at 45 degrees and lock them the side by using 2 1/2″ screws. Add glue to the join and align the edges with great care. Make sure the corners are right-angled and leave no gaps between the components.

Fitting the top supports

Fitting the top supports

In order to add extra-support to the bench, we recommend you to fit 2×4 support to the top of the frame, as described in the diagram. Drill pocket holes at both ends and secure them into place with 2 1/2″ screws. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth.

Fitting the seat slats

Fitting the seat slats

One of the last steps of the project is to build the seat of the corner bench. Therefore, cut the slats out of 2×4 lumber and cut their ends at 45 degrees. Attach the slats to the frame and secure them into place by using 2 1/2″ screws. Place the screws equally-spaced and leave no gaps between the components.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the corner bench.
