Building the frame of the bench

Building the frame of the bench

The first step of the project is to build the frame of the bench. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to build the components out of 1×16 lumber. Cut the components at the right size and drill pocket holes at both ends of the bottom slat. Make sure the corners are square and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the sides. Add waterproof glue to the joints and remove the excess using a damp cloth.

Fitting the partitions

Fitting the partitions

The next step of the woodworking project is to build the partitions. Drill pocket holes along the top and bottom edges before locking them into place. Place the partitions equally-spaced and make sure the corners are square. Add waterproof glue to the joints in order to create a rigid structure.

Attaching the trims

Attaching the trims

Continue the woodworking project by attaching the trims to the face of the hall tree bench. Cut the trims at the right size and attach them to the structure, as described in the image. Make sure you lock the trims together by using pocket holes.

Next, attach the top to the hall bench. Center the piece of 1×16 lumber to the structure and insert screws through the top of the side components and partitions into the top. Make sure the corners are square and add glue to the joints. Drill pocket holes along the 1×2 trim and secure it to the top using 1 1/4″ screws. Leave no gaps between the components and add glue to create a rigid structure.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the bench.
