This step by step diy woodworking project is about faux fireplace plans. If you want to learn how to build a wood faux fireplace, we recommend you to pay attention to the instructions described in the article and to check out the related projects. There are many storage projects featured on our site, so don’t be afraid to browse through the rest of the woodworking plans.

Before starting the actual construction project, we recommend you to plan everything, as to save money and to keep the costs under control. Adjust the size and the design of the faux fireplace to suit your needs. In addition, we recommend you to invest in high-quality materials, such as pine, redwood or cedar, as they have a nice finish and are highly durable, especially in a humid environment.

It is essential to invest in high quality materials, that are also water-resistant, such as pressure-treated lumber. Cut the components at the right size by using a circular saw and smooth the cut edges with a sand block. Don’t forget to ask a skilled friend to assist you during the project, especially if you don’t have a large expertise in the field. You need someone to hold the components into place, while you drive the screws in. See all my Premium Plans in the Shop.

Building the arch

Building the arch

The first step of the project is to build the top arch for the fireplace. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to mark the cut line to the 2×10 slat and to get the job done using a jigsaw. Smooth the edge with fine-grit-sandpaper and remove the residues with a damp cloth.

Fitting the supports

Next, attach the 2×4 supports to the top component. Drill pocket holes at the top of the legs and secure them to the arch using 2 1/2″ screws. Add glue to create a rigid bond between the components.

Fitting the legs

Afterwards, you need to attach the 4×4 legs to the sides of the faux fireplace. Drill pocket holes along the sides of the frame and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the vertical posts. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess using a damp cloth. Make sure the edges are flush one with another before inserting the screws.

Fitting the trim

Continue the project by fitting the top slat to the frame of the faux fireplace. Drill pilot holes through the slat and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the frame. Align the edges with great care and add glue for a better bond between the components.

Fitting the middle trim

Fitting the middle trim

In order to enhance the look of the fireplace, we recommend you to fit a 2×6 slat to the top of the fireplace. Drill pilot holes through the middle trim and secure it to the structure by using 2 1/2″ screws. Make sure the side overhangs are perfectly equal before locking it into place with screws.

Last but not least, we recommend you to fit the top trim to the faux. Center the top trim to the structure and secure it into place using 2 1/2″ screws and glue. Smooth the exposed edges with sandpaper and remove the excess with a damp cloth.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the wooden fireplace.
