Building the front of the chair

Building the front of the chair

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the front face of the farmhouse chair. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the components out of 2×4 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the front support and secure it to the legs using 2 1/2″ screws. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth.

Continue the project by building the back of the chair. Cut the components out of 2×4 lumber and drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal supports. Secure the supports to the back legs using 2 1/2″ screws. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth. Check if the corners are square and make sure the edges are flush.

Assembling the frame of the chair

The next step of the project is to lock the front and the back faces of the chair, as in the diagram. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and to secure them to the legs using 2 1/2″ screws. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are square.

Fitting the corner supports

Fitting the corner supports

In order to enhance the rigidity of the chair, we recommend you to fit supports to the corners of the seat frame. Cut on diagonal two pieces of 3 1/2″ long 2×4 slats and secure them to the corners, as in the diagram. Drill pilot holes before inserting the screws to prevent the wood from splitting.

Fit the 2×4 slats to the seat frame and lock them in place with screws. Drill pilot holes before inserting the 2 1/2″ screws and countersink their head. Leave no gaps between the slats and smooth the exposed edges.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the nightstand.

Hi. I like the chair but it looks from the diagrams that nearly every piece is a 2×4. They are flush with the other wood. For example, the first step has the 10 1/2 piece. It looks like a 2×4 in all the images but the cut list shows it as a 1×3. Also, on the chair back, the 3 pieces that go across the back appear to be 2×4. Do you have a few pictures of an actual chair so I can see which pieces are which? I really like the design and got stuck right at the beginning! Help! Mamma needs new chairs :)

Sorry for the errors in the cutting list. Actually, all the components for this projects are made from 2x4s. Good luck with the project and let me know how it comes out.
