How to build a farmhouse bed
Â
The first step of the project is to build the panel for the headboard. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to use 1×6 lumber for the cleats and 2×6 slats for the vertical components. Lay the panel on a level surface and attach the 1×6 cleats, making sure the edges are perfectly aligned. Add glue to the joints and insert 1 1/4″ brad nails to lock everything together tightly.
Â
Â
Drill pilot holes at both ends of the cleats and secure the panel to the legs using 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are right-angled. Center the panel to the legs, if you want to get a professional result. Smooth the cut edges with fine-grit sandpaper and remove the residues with a damp cloth.
Â
Â
Fit a 2×6 support to the headboard, as described in the diagram. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the support and secure it to the legs using 2 1/2″ screws. Make sure the edges are aligned and the corners square.
Â
Â
Continue the project by assembling the footboard. Build the legs out of 4×4 lumber and the panel out of 2×10 lumber. As you can see in the plans, you need to drill pocket holes at both ends of the slat and secure it to the legs using 2 1/2″ screws. Align the beam to the back edge of the legs before inserting the screws.
Â
Â
Afterwards, fit the 2×4 trim to the footboard, as shown in the diagram. Align the component into place with attention, making sure the edges are flush. Drill pilot holes though the trim and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the structure. Countersink the head of the screws and add glue to the joints.
Â
Â
Attach the 2×10 side rails to the headboard and to the footboard. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the components and secure them to the legs using 2 1/2″ screws. Add glue to the joints, in order to enhance the rigidity of the structure.
Â
Â
Fit the 2×4 cleats to the sides of the bed frame. Drill pilot holes and insert 2″ screws into the side rails. Use a spirit level to make sure the cleats are horizontal.
Â
Â
Fit the middle cleat to the bed frame to add support to the construction. Drill pilot holes at both ends of the cleat and secure it to the frame using 2 1/2″ screws.
Â
Â
One of the last steps of the project is to attach the 1×4 support slats to the cleats. Place the slats equally-spaced, drill pilot holes and secure them into place with 1 1/4″ screws.
Â
Â
This bed frame with a rustic design can match the style of any room, but you should select the colors properly.
Â
Â
Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. In order to get a professional result, fill the holes and the gaps with wood filler and let it dry out for a few hours. Â Check if there are protruding screws and fix this issue, if necessary.

Great plans. However materials list needs rework. I caught 2x10s for sides in directions. I missed 2x6s for verticals in head board – materials list 1x6s. Also 2×10 for foot board not listed in materials. Id be done in one night had the materials been correct. Also missing 2×4 measurements for cleats – i got that from the diagram. Otherwise super easy design.
Thank you for the feedback. I’ve updated the list. Looking forward to seeing your future projects.
What is the correct length for the side rails?Materials list shows 77.5 for the 2×10 but 80.5 for the 2×4. Lengths don’t match and 80 inch king size mattress won’t fit inside 77.5 inch side rails.
They all need to be 80 1/2″. I’ve updated the cut list. Thank you.
