How to build a dining table

Building the sides of the dining table

Building the sides of the dining table

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the sides of the dining table. If you want to enhance the look of your woodworking project, we recommend you to use 4×4 turned legs. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the aprons and secure it to the legs using 2 1/2″ screws. Leave no gaps between the components and make sure the corners are square.

Smart Tip: Recess the aprons 3/4″ from the face of the legs. Use a piece of 3/4″ wood to make sure the recess is even at both ends of the aprons.

Next, you need lock the sides of the dining table together, as described in the diagram. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the aprons and secure them to the legs using 2 1/2″ screws. Recess the aprons for about 3/4″, in order to get a professional result. Make sure the corners are square before inserting the screws.

Fitting the middle supports

In order to enhance the rigidity of the structure, we recommend you to fit 2×4 supports to the tabletop. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and secure them to the aprons using 2 1/2″ screws. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are square. Place the supports equally-spaced.

Building the tabletop

Building the tabletop

Building the tabletop for the dining table is easy, but you need to use certain techniques. Drill the pocket holes to the 2×6 slats, as shown in the diagram, and lay them on a level surface. Insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock everything together, after adding glue to the joints. Make sure the edges are flush and leave no gaps between the components.

Smart Tip: Do not add glue to the joints, as the construction wood is not perfectly dry and it may shrink or expand overtime.

Fitting the bread board ends

Fit the bread board ends to the tabletop, as described in the diagram. Leave no gaps between the components and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock everything tightly. Make sure the edges are aligned before inserting the screws.

Attaching the tabletop

Lay the tabletop on a level surface and center the frame with great attention. Pay attention to these steps, otherwise the end result won’t be professional. Drill pocket holes through the aprons and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the tabletop. Leave no gaps between the components.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. In order to get a professional result, fill the holes and the gaps with wood filler and let it dry out for a few hours. Check if there are protruding screws and fix this issue, if necessary.

Smart Tip: Apply a few coats of stain or exterior paint to the components, in order to protect them from decay and water damage. Check out the rest of the furniture plans featured on our website.
