This step by step diy woodworking project is about CPU cart plans. If you want to build a really basic CPU cart with several shelves, we strongly recommend you to pay attention to the information described in the article. Although this project might look simple at first sight, we strongly recommend you to plan everything from the very beginning and to work with attention.

There are a lot of CPU cart designs to choose from, so make sure you take several plans into account before starting the actual construction. Moreover, we recommend you to adjust the size and the shape of the cart to suit your needs, while still using the techniques and the tips shown in the project. If it is necessary, we suggest you to ask a skilled friend to assist you during the construction.

Adding the storage shelves to one side of the cart is not compulsory, but it will most certainly help you organize your things a lot better. Invest in high quality plywood or MDF, especially if you want to get the job done as a PRO and to use the cart for many years in a row. Don’t forget to take a brief look over the rest of the projects featured on this site, as there are many plans that could add value to your home. See all my Premium Plans in the Shop.

Building the frame of the cart

Building the frame of the cart

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame of the cart, using 3/4″ plywood or MDF. Make sure you mark the cut lines with a pencil before adjusting the components to the right dimensions with a circular saw.

Continue the project by assembling the supports for the shelves, as shown in the image. Make sure you drill pocket holes before inserting the 1 1/4″ screws into place. Check if the corners are right-angled by using a carpentry square, before adding waterproof glue and driving the screws in.

The next step of the project is to attach the piece of 3/4″ plywood over the frame and to lock it into place with galvanized screws. Align the piece of plywood with great attention before inserting the screws into place, if you want to get a professional result.

If you want to increase the storage space, we recommend you to fit several 1×8 shelves into place, as shown in the image. Cut the pieces of lumber and make sure the corners are square before locking them into place with screws. You could use either pocket screws or drill pilot holes through the splitting wall and insert 1 1/4″ screws.

Attaching the wheels

One of the last steps of the project is to lock the caster wheels to the bottom of the cart, as shown in the image. Align the wheels properly and lock them into place with screws.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the wooden cart.
