Building a corner hutch
The first step of the project is to build the frame of the corner bed hutch. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to use 2×2 lumber for the studs and for the plates. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the studs. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are square. Align the edges with great care and leave no gaps between the components.
Continue the project by fitting the rest of the components to assemble the box. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 2 1/” screws to assemble the frame of the box together thoroughly. Make sure the edges are flush and check if the corners are square.
Continue the woodworking project by fitting the 3/4″ plywood panels to the frame of the box. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to align the sheets to the box frame and to secure them to the studs by using brad nails and glue. Align the edges with great care, to get a professional appearance.
Next, you need to build the components for the storage compartments of the corner bed hutch. Mark the cut lines on the 1×16 slats and get the job done with a circular saw. Smooth the edges with fine-grit sandpaper and remove the residues with a damp cloth.
Drill pocket holes along the bottom edges of the components. In addition drill pocket holes along the common edge of the short component (grey). Fit the components into place and secure them tightly by inserting 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth.
Building the partitions is a straight-forward process, as you need to use 1×8 slats. Mark the cut lines on the slats and use a circular saw to make the notches. Use a chisel to remove the excess and smooth the edges with sandpaper.
Drill pocket holes along the bottom edges, as well as along the edges that joint the frame. Align the components with great care and insert 1 1/4″ screws to lock them tightly into place. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth.
Build the top components out of 3/4″ plywood. Mark the cut lines on the plywood sheets and use a circular saw to make the curved cuts. Smooth the edges with fine-grit sandpaper and remove the residues.
Fit the top components to the frame and align the edges with attention. Use 1 1/4″ brad nails to secure the components into place tightly. Add glue for a more durable bond.
Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.
