This step by step diy woodworking project is about closet organizer plans. If you want to build a nice closet organizer, we recommend you to pay attention to the instructions described in this article. Choose quality lumber, such as pine, cedar or redwood, otherwise the organizer won’t have a neat appearance. Take accurate measurements and plan everything from the very beginning.

There are many designs to choose form when building a nice closet organizer. Therefore, we strongly suggest you to take a look over several options before starting the actual construction project. Always adjust the size of the closet organizer to your needs, otherwise it might not fit into place. Moreover, you can modify the structure of the organizer if you need more storage space.

It is essential to select the lumber with great care, making sure the 1×16 boards are perfectly straight and in very good visual condition. Therefore, the boars shouldn’t have any chip, crack or any other visible flaw. Align the components at both ends and drill pocket holes before inserting the screws into place. Add waterproof glue to the joints, in order to enhance the bond of the structure. See all my Premium Plans in the Shop.

Building a closet organizer

Building the tower boxes

Building the tower boxes

The first step of the project is to build the tower boxes that will be placed on both sides of the closet organizer. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to build the frame out of 1×16 lumber, using the instructions described in the image. Check if the corners are right-angled before locking the components into place.

Smart Tip: Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal components before inserting the 1 1/4″ screws into the vertical components. Plumb the side slats with a spirit level to make sure the end result will be professional.

Assembling the closet organizer

The next step of the project is to lock the tower boxes together by installing the components shown in the plans. Cut the lumber at the right size, drill pocket holes at both ends and insert the screws into the frame, as shown in the image.

Smart Tip: Place a spirit level on the shelves to check if they are horizontal. In addition, reinforce the structure by placing 1×2 supports under the 1×16 slats. Make sure the components are aligned at both ends, in order to get a professional result.

Fitting the closet rod

Continue the project by attaching closet rods to the side walls of the tower boxes, as shown in the image. Use rod pockets to lock them into place in a professional manner. In addition, we recommend you to measure with great attention, as to leave enough room to hang your cloths.

In order to have a proper access to the closet organizer, we recommend you to build a basic base out of 2×4 lumber. Therefore, cut the components at the right size and assemble the frame as described in the plans. Check if the corners are right angled and secure it to the bottom of the organizer with screws.

Building the small shelves

If you want to increase the storage space, you need to build several shelves as shown in the image. Cut the components at the right size and lock them into place with pocket screws. Adjust the size of the shelves according to your needs. In addition, you could also fit several drawer to the opposite tower box, if you want to store your accessories properly.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues. If you want to enhance the look of the organizer, you could attach 1×4 trims to the bottom of the structure.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the arbor bench.
