Building the headboard

Building the headboard

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the components for the headboard. In order to build a bed with a beautiful appearance, we recommend you to cut the top slat in a decorative manner. As you can notice in the diagram, we recommend you to mark the cut lines on the slats and to get the job done with a circular saw. Smooth the cut lines with fine-grit sandpaper and remove the residues with a damp cloth.

The next step of the project is to assemble the headboard. Build the legs out of 2×2 lumber and the bottom slat out of 1×6 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal components and secure them to the legs by using 1 1/4″ screws. Adjust the distance between the slats according to your tastes and center the slats to the legs before inserting the screws. Add glue to the joints.

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the slat and center it to the legs before inserting the 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are square.

Adjust the height at which you place the cleats according to the thickness of the mattress. Use a good spirit level to make sure the cleats are horizontal before inserting the galvanized screws into the frame. Use 2″ screws and glue to lock the cleats into place.

Fitting the support slats

One of the last steps of the project is to attach the 1×4 support slats to the cleats. Cut the slats at the right size and secure them to the cleats by using 1 1/4″ screws. Place the slats equally-spaced to get a professional result.
