Building a canopy bed
Â
The first step of the project is to build the frame of the canopy bed. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the legs out of 2×2 lumber and the frame out of 1×10 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the slats and secure them to the legs by using 1 1/4″ screws.
Â
Â
Continue the project by attaching the 3/4″ plywood panel to the front of the bed, in order to build the headboard. Drill pocket holes along the sides and along the top edges of the plywood panel. Secure the panels to the legs by using 1 1/4″ screws. Build the support out of 2×2 lumber and drill pocket holes at both ends. Secure the support to the legs by using 2 1/2″ screws and glue. Leave no gaps between the components.
Â
Â
In order to enhance the look of the headboard, we recommend you to attach 1×2 trims as in the diagram. Use 1 1/4″  brad nails and glue to lock the trims into place. Place the trims equally-spaced, in order to get a symmetrical look.
Â
Â
Fit the 1×2 cleats to the interior faces of the bed frame. Use 1 1/4″ screws and glue to lock the cleats to the bed frame. Place a spirit level to the interior frame of the bed. Use a spirit level to make sure the cleats are horizontal.
Â
Â
Fit the support slats to the cleats and secure them into place using finishing nails. Place the support slats equally-spaced.
Â
Â
Build the canopy for the bed out of 2×2 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the short components and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock the components together tightly. Drill pocket holes along the top of the legs and insert 2 1/2″ screws to create rigid joints.
Â
Â
Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Thanks for sharing all of these project plans, I’m positive that we all find them very useful.
I have a twin xl size bed that I want to build into a canopy bed for my nephew. I was wondering if I could just build the canopy and legs and place it over the bed. I ask your advice this because one, I don’t have much wood at the moment and two, the bed frame it’s on now is metal. I don’t know how good of a connection that would’ve been.
I’m open to any suggestions. Thanks in advance.
