This step by step woodworking project is about deck bench made from 2x4s plans. I have designed this easy to build deck bench so you can create some seating area with minimum effort and costs. This bench requires just 2x4s and screws, so you shouldn’t find it difficult to get the job done by yourself. If you have a higher budget, invest in weather resistant lumber. See my other DIY projects HERE.

We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Drill pilot holes trough the components before inserting the wood screws, to prevent the wood from splitting. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a deck bench from 2x4s

Building the legs

Building the legs

The first step of the project is to build the legs for the deck bench. Therefore, cut the components from 2×4 lumber, as shown in the diagram. Center the vertical component to the horizontal ones. Drill pilot holes through the 11″ long components and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the vertical post. Make sure the corners are square.

Fitting the braces

Fitting the braces

Next, you need to cut the braces from 2×4 lumber. Make 45 degree bevel cuts at both ends of the braces. Fit the braces to the legs, drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws.

Fitting the seat slats

Fitting the seat slats

Next, attach the 2×4 slats to the legs of the deck bench. Fit a piece of 1/4″ plywood between the slats to create even gaps. Align the edges, drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to secure the slats into place tightly.

Fitting the trims

Fitting the trims

Use 2×4 lumber for the exterior trims. Make 45 degree cuts at both ends of the trims and then secure them to the bench with 2 1/2″ nails. Leave no gaps between the trims.

Apply a few coats of paint / stain to enhance the look of the bench and to protect the lumber from the elements.
