If you want to learn more about building a bed hutch, we recommend you to pay attention to the instructions described in the article. This is a two parts project, so make sure you read the other article in which we show you how to build the top horizontal storage unit.

Before starting the actual construction project, we recommend you to plan everything, as to save money and to keep the costs under control. Adjust the size and the design of the bed hutch towers to suit your needs. In addition, we recommend you to invest in high-quality materials, such as pine, redwood or cedar, as they have a nice finish and are highly durable, especially in a humid environment.

If you don’t have a rich expertise in woodworking field, you should ask a friend to give you a hand with the project. There are many things that you could go wrong, so make sure you plan everything and invest in quality materials. Select the lumber with attention, making sure the components are perfectly straight and in a very good condition. Use a carpentry square to check if the corners are right-angled. Building the frame of the hutch

Building the frame of the hutch

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame of the hutch. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the components out of 1×12 lumber. Cut the slats at the right size and smooth the edges by using fine-grit sandpaper. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal slats and secure them to the sides by using 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are square.

Next, you have to attach the top to the structure of the bed hutch. Drill pocket holes along the top edges of the side components and align the edges with great care. Make sure the edges are flush one with another before inserting the screws. Ad glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth. Check if the corners are square before inserting the screws and leave no gaps.

Attaching the back

Attaching the back

Build the back of the tower hutch out of 1/4″ plywood. Attach the plywood sheet to the frame of the hutch and lock it into place by using finishing nails and waterproof glue. Leave no gaps between the components and make sure the corners are square.

Attaching the front trims

Attaching the front trims

Continue the indoor woodworking project by fitting the 1×2 trims to the front face of the hutch. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to use 1 1/4″ brad nails and glue. Leave no gaps between the components and remove the excess glue with a damp cloth.

One of the last steps of the project is to attach the top 1×2 trim to the tower hutch. Drill pocket holes along the long edge of the trim and insert 1 1/4″ screws to lock it into place tightly. Add glue and make sure the edges are flush.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the hutch.
