Building a coffee table
Â
The first step of the woodworking project is build the frame of the coffee table. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to build the legs out of 4×4 lumber and the frame out of 2×3 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and secure them to the legs with 2 1/2″ galvanized screws. Add waterproof glue to the joints.
Â
Â
Build the bottom shelf of the coffee table by fitting 1×3 slats between the frame components. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the slats and secure them to the frame with galvanized screws. Place the slats equally-spaced, in order to get a professional appearance.
Â
Â
In order to enhance the look of the coffee table, we recommend you to add trims to both sides. Cut the trims out of 2×3 lumber at the right size and secure them into place with galvanized screws. Add glue to the joints, in order to create a rigid structure.
Â
Â
Cut a piece of 3/4″ plywood at the right size and secure it to the frame of the coffee table with screws. Drill pocket holes through the frame and insert screws into the plywood top. Leave no gaps between the components, if you want to get a professional result.
Â
Â
Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.
