This step by step diy woodworking project is about storage twin bed plans. There are many things that you could go wrong, so make sure you plan everything and invest in quality materials. Select the lumber with attention, making sure the components are perfectly straight and in a very good condition. Use a carpentry square to check if the corners are right-angled.

Building a twin bed

Materials

• A – 4 pieces of 3/4″ plywood – 15″x15″ long, 4 pieces – 15″x59 1/2″ long, 2 pieces – 12 3/4″x15″ long STORAGE UNITS
• B – 2 pieces of 1/4″ plywood – 15″x61″ long, 1 piece – 15″x40 1/2 long BACKS
• C – 2 pieces of 1×4 lumber – 61″ long, 13 pieces – 7″ long FRAME
• D – 1 piece of 3/4″ plywood – 61″x8 1/2 long SUPPORTS
• E – 2 pieces of 3/4″ plywood – 14 1/4″x15 long, 2 pieces – 39″x14 1/4″ long, 1 piece – 12 3/4″x14 1/4″ long FOOT STORAGE
• F – 4 pieces of 1×2 lumber – 61″ long, 2 pieces – 40 1/2″ long, 9 pieces – 12″ long TRIMS

Building a storage bed

Building the side storage units

The first step of the project is to build the side storage units. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to cut the 3/4″ plywood components at the right size. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the top and bottom components, as well as at both ends of the partition. Make sure the corners are right-angled and insert 1 1/4″ screws to create a rigid structure. Add waterproof glue to the joints and align everything with great care.

Attaching the back to the storage units

Attach the 1/4″ plywood piece to the back of the storage unit, as shown in the plans. Align the sheet at both ends, check if the corners are square and secure it into place with 1 1/4″ galvanized screws.

Attaching the trims to the side units

Attach the 1×2 trims to the faces of the side storage units. Align the components with attention and secure them into place with finishing nails. Make sure you drill pocket holes at both ends of the vertical trims, in order to lock them together tightly. Leave no gaps between the trims, in order to get a professional result.

Building the cleat frame

Lock the two sides of the store bed together by making a simple frame out of 1×4 slats. Lock the components together and attach it to the storage units with galvanized screws. Leave no gaps between the components and make sure the joint are rigid. Place the frame 3/4” under the top edges of the storage units.

Attaching the plywood sheet

Attach a piece of 3/4″ plywood to the frame and lock it into place with galvanized screws, in order to create a level surface.

Building the bottom unit

Building the foot storage unit is the next step of the project. Pay attention to the diagram before locking the components together, otherwise the parts might not fit together properly.

Attaching the plywood back

Attach the 1/4″ plywood back to the frame, as described in the image. Work with attention and align everything with great care.

Fitting the trims

Next, fit the 1×2 trims to the exterior of the storage unit. Align everything and secure the trims into place with galvanized screws.

Building the bed frame

Drive several screws through the back of the foot storage unit into the bed frame. Make sure the components are aligned one with another before inserting the screws.

Last but not least, you need to attach the top shelf into place. Drill pocket holes at the top of the legs and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the shelf. We recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.
