Building a bookcase
Â
The first step of the woodworking is to build the frame of the bookcase. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to build the frame out of 1×14 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal components and secure them to the sides with 1 1/4″ screws. Make sure the corners are right-angled and add waterproof glue to the joints, in order to create a rigid structure. Fut the partition to the bottom shelves, as shown in the diagram.
Â
Â
In order to enhance the look of the bookcase, we recommend you to fit the 1×2 trims to the face of the components, as in the diagram. Align the components at both ends before locking them into place with finishing nails. Drill pilot holes at both ends of the yellow components and secure them to the sides with 1 1/4″ screws.
Â
Â
Cut a piece of 1/4″ or 1/2″ plywood and attach it to the back of the bookcase, as shown in the plans. Align the components at both ends and secure the plywood piece to the structure with finishing nails.
Â
Â
Building the drawers for the bottom of the bookcase is a straight-forward process. Therefore, we recommend you to build the drawers using 1×8 slats. Make sure the components are aligned properly, leave no gaps between the components and secure them together with pocket holes. Build the bottom out of 3/4″ plywood.
Â
Â
Fit the drawers inside the openings and attach handles to their faces. Smooth the faces with fine grit sandpaper.
Â
Â
On order to enhance the look of the bookcase, we recommend you to fit the top components to the bookcase and secure it into place with finishing nails. Cut the ends of the trims at the right angle (45 degrees) and secure them into place with finishing nails.
Â
Â
Last but not least, you need to attach the top shelf into place. Drill pocket holes at the top of the legs and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the shelf. We recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.
