Building a console table

Building the supports

The first step of the woodworking project is about building the legs of the console table, using 1×3 lumber. Cut the components at the right size and lock them together with galvanized screws, making sure the corners are right-angled. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal components and lock them to the vertical legs with 1 14″ screws.

Attaching the shelves

Continue the project by attaching the 3/4″ plywood shelves to the supports, as shown in the diagram. Cut the plywood at the right size and fit them into place with galvanized screws. Add waterproof glue to the joints, in order to create a rigid structure. Make sure the shelves are horizontal and the corners square. Smooth the cut edges before fitting the shelves into place.

Building the countertop

Building the tabletop of the console table is a straight forward, but you need to use the most appropriate techniques and to assemble the components tightly. Cut a piece of plywood at the dimensions shown in the image and lay it in on a level surface. Assemble the frame of the table using 1×3 slats and attach it to the counter-top. Drill pocket holes through the bottom of the supports and secure them into place with screws and waterproof glue.

Attaching the tabletop

Fit the frame of the console table inside the tabletop, and make sure it is centered. Drill pocket holes through the supports and secure the frame to the counter-top with 1 1/4″ galvanized screws. Make sure the corners are square and the joints are very rigid.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.
