Before starting the actual construction project, we recommend you to plan everything, as to save money and to keep the costs under control. Adjust the size and the design of the wine rack to suit your needs. In addition, we recommend you to invest in high-quality materials, such as pine, redwood or cedar, as they have a nice finish and are highly durable, especially in a humid environment.

If you don’t have a rich expertise in woodworking field, you should ask a friend to give you a hand with the project. There are many things that you could go wrong, so make sure you plan everything and invest in quality materials. Select the lumber with attention, making sure the components are perfectly straight and in a very good condition. Use a carpentry square to check if the corners are right-angled. Building the frame of the rack

Building the frame of the rack

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame of the wine rack. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to drill pocket holes at both ends of the vertical supports and to insert screws into the top component. Add waterproof glue to the joints and make sure the corners are right-angled.

Fitting the back wall

Fitting the back wall

Continue the project by attaching the back to the frame. Cut the piece of 1/2″ plywood at the dimensions described in the image and secure it to the frame with finishing nails. Add waterproof glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth.

Building the wine shelves

Next, you need to assemble the shelves. In order to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to build the front face of the shelves out of 1×3 slats. Mark the cut lines on the slats and use a drill hole saw or a jigsaw to make the round notches. Secure the faces to the wooden shelves with finishing nails.

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the shelves and secure them to the side components of the frame with galvanized screws. Make sure the shelves are horizontal and the corners are right-angled before securing the components into place with 1 1/4″ galvanized screws. Make sure you place the shelves equally-spaced, if you want to get a professional and symmetrical result.

Attaching the trims

Attaching the trims

Attaching the trims to the bottom and to the top of the wine rack is a straight-forward process, but you need to pay attention to several aspects before getting the job done. Cut the components at the right size and make sure the joints will be of 45 degrees. Secure the trims into place with finishing nails and waterproof glue.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the wine rack.
