Building the frame of the twin bed

Building the frame of the twin bed

The first step of the woodworking project, we recommend you to build the frame of the twin bed. First of all, we recommend you to assemble the frame, out of 2×4 lumber. Make sure the corners are right-angled and secure the components together with 2 1/2″ galvanized screws. Next, attach the legs to the frame, making sure they are perfectly plumb.

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the side components and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the legs. Place a spirit level on top of the frame, to make sure the components are perfectly horizontal.

Fitting the exterior rails

Attach the 1×10 rails to the exterior of the bed frame, as shown in the image. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the rails and secure them to the legs with 1 1/4″ screws. Leave no gaps between the components.

Building the headboards

Building the headboards

Cut a piece of 3/4″ plywood at the right dimensions and drill pocket holes along the edges. Fit the headboard between the legs and secure it into place with 1 1/4″ screws. Add waterproof glue to enhance the rigidity of the joints.

Fitting the headboard trims

If you want to enhance the look of the headboard, you could attach x-shaped trims. Cut the components out of 2×4 lumber and secure them into place with 3/4″ screws, inserted from the back of the bed. Add waterproof glue to enhance the rigidity of the joints.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to attach the 2×4 and 2×6 trims on top of the headboard. Cut the trims at the right size and secure them to the top of the legs with galvanized screws. Center the 2×6 trim over the 2×4 slat, in order to get a professional result.

Attaching the slats

Cut the 1×4 support slats at the right size and fit them over the cleats, making sure they are equally-spaced. Leave 1 1/2″ between the slats, in order to get the job done properly. Secure the slats to the cleats with 1 1/4″ screws.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the bed frame.
