This step by step diy woodworking project is about kids desk plans. If you want to build a small desk for your kids, we recommend you to pay attention to the following instructions described in the article, as well as to the featured diagrams. Work with good judgement and don’y forget to pay attention to the rest of the related projects, as there might be other designs more appealing to your needs.

There are several aspects that you have to pay attention to before starting the actual construction of the kids desk. Therefore, we recommend you to invest in high quality materials such as pine, cedar or redwood, as they combine a nice appearance with a great durability. Select the components with attention, making sure they are perfectly straight an in a very good condition.

Align the components at both ends and drill pocket holes by using a jig, before inserting the galvanized screws. Add glue to the joints if you want to enhance the bond of the components. We strongly recommend you to check if the corners are right-angled after inserting the screws. Use fine-grit sandpaper to smooth the components and remove the debris with a damp cloth, before applying several coats of paint. See all my Premium Plans in the Shop.

Building the frame of the desk

Building the frame of the desk

The first step of the project is to build the sides of the desk. As you can see in the image, we recommend you to assemble the frame by using 1×8 slats. Cut the slats at the right size and assemble the frame together with great care. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the slats and insert 1 1/4″ galvanized screws into the side walls. Add waterproof glue to the joints if you want to enhance the rigidity of the structure. In addition, check if the corners are right-angled by using a carpentry square.

Continue the woodworking project by attaching the pieces of 3/4″ plywood to the back of the frames. Drill pocket holes around the edges and insert the screws into the frame. Add waterproof glue to the edges and remove the excess material with a damp cloth.

Attaching the shelf rails

Attaching the shelf rails

Attaching the 1×2 rails to the components, as seen in the image. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the rails and attach the rails into place with galvanized screws. Add waterproof glue to the joints and check if the rails are perfectly horizontal by using a spirit level.

Build a small rectangular frame out of 1×4 slats and lock them together before attaching it to the both sides of the desk. Align the frame at both ends and lock it into place with galvanized screws. Add waterproof glue to the joints and use a spirit level to check if the frame is perfectly horizontal.

Attaching the tabletop

Attaching the tabletop

One of the last steps of the project is to attach the 3/4″ plywood tabletop to the frame. Drill pocket holes through the frame and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the tabletop. In addition, we recommend you to add waterproof glue to the joints, in order to lock the tabletop into place.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the desk.
