This step by step diy woodworking project is about simple desk plans. If you want to build a simple desk with a pleasant design, we recommend you to pay attention to the instructions described in the article. Work with attention and ask a skilled friend to assist you while assembling the components. Building a simple hutch would increase the storage space, so make sure you check out the rest of the article.

There are several aspects that should be taken into account when building the wooden desk, so make sure you pay attention to our tips and instructions. Adjust the size of the components to suit your needs and plan everything from the very beginning. Invest in high quality materials, such as pine, cedar or redwood, as you will notice the difference on the long run.

We strongly recommend you to check out the rest of the related plans, as there might be another design that could suit your needs. Gather all the materials from the very beginning, as well as the tools. Drill pilot holes through the components before inserting the screws, to prevent the wood from splitting. Add glue to the joints if you want to enhance the rigidity of the frame. See all my Premium Plans in the Shop.

Building the legs of the desk

Building the legs of the desk

The first step of the project is to build the legs of the desk. As you can notice in the image, we recommend you to join together a piece of 2×2 lumber with a piece of 2×4 lumber. Cut the components at the right size and lock them together with waterproof glue and finishing nails. Use several C-clamps to lock the components together tightly.

Fitting the aprons

Fitting the aprons

The next step of the project is to build the frame of the table, using the information from the plans. Cut the aprons at the right size and lock them together with screws. Make sure you align the components at both ends, drill pocket holes at both ends of the smaller components  and insert 1 1/4″ screws. Add waterproof glue to enhance the rigidity of the joints and check if the corners are right-angled.

Fitting the bottom braces

Fitting the bottom braces

Attaching braces to the bottom of the desk is a straight-forward process, but it will have a beneficial impact on the whole structure. Drill pilot holes and attach the braces to the legs, after leveling them with a spirit level.

Attaching the diagonal braces

Attaching the diagonal braces

If you really want to add character to your project, we recommend you to attach diagonal braces to both sides of the simple desk. Cut both ends of the braces at 45 degrees, as shown in the plans. Using a miter saw will allow you to get very accurate cuts.

Attaching the tabletop

Attaching the tabletop

You can use a 2’x4′ project board for the tabletop. As you can see in the image, we recommend you to lay the piece of plywood on a level surface and to center the desk frame to it. Drill pocket holes through the aprons and insert 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to enhance the bond of the joints.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the wooden desk.
