This step by step diy woodworking project is about how to build a hammock stand. Building a wood hammock stand will enhance the look of your yard and make for a great relaxation area. Therefore, we recommend you to follow the instructions with great care and to check out the rest of the outdoor projects. Adjust the size of the stand if needed, while using the carpentry techniques described in the article.

As you will see in this article, you don’t need big trees to set your hammock. On the contrary, you can move it wherever you want, if you decide to build a wood stand. Strange as it may seem, a hammock stand is a straight-forward project, but your just need to select the right plans for your needs. Moreover, invest in quality and durable lumber, such as cedar, pine or redwood.

After cutting the components at the right size, we recommend you to lock them together with screws. If you want to make a permanent structure, we recommend you to add waterproof glue to the joints, beside inserting the screws. Adding the braces is an essential part of the project, as they will provide support to the structure and minimize the forces that act on the stand. See all my Premium Plans in the Shop.

Building the frame of the hammock

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the components of the frame. Therefore, build two beams out of 2×6 lumber, as in the free plans. Make the notches inside the beams by using a circular saw. After making several cuts, we recommend you to clean the recess with a chisel and a piece of sandpaper.

Fitting the supports

Fitting the supports

The next step of the project is to attach the support to the frame and lock them into place tightly with several carriage bolts. Drill two pilot holes through the three components and insert 5″ carriage bolts. Cut one end of the supports at 45 degrees, by using a miter saw.

Fitting the base

Fitting the base

In order to provide support to the hammock stand, we recommend you to fit the base components. After adjusting the 2×4 slats at the right size, we recommend you to center them to the stand. Drill pilot holes trough the 2×6 beams and insert 3 1/2″ galvanized screws into the base components.

Installing the braces

Installing the braces

The next step of the woodworking project is to reinforce the whole structure by installing the braces. Cut one end of the braces at 30 degrees, while the opposite one should be cut at 15 degrees. Align the braces at both ends and lock them into place with 3 1/2″ screws. Don’t forget to pre-drill the braces, in order to prevent the wood from splitting. Add waterproof glue to the joints, in order to get a rigid structure.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Insert metal eye screws to the top of the supports, making sure they are placed symmetrically. Hang the hammock and check if it needs any adjustments.

Smart Tip: Fill the holes with putty and smooth the wooden surface along the wood grain, by using medium-grit sandpaper. Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay.
