This step by step woodworking project is about how to build a hexagon table. Building a hexagonal picnic table out of wood is a great project for any backyard, especially if you like to take dinner in open space, surrounded by trees and flowers. The best part of the project, is that it doesn’t require a large investment nor complex skills, as one might imagine at first glance.

If regular picnic table plans doesn’t suit your needs and tastes, you should take into account building a more complex structure, such as a hexagon or an octagon table. As you will see in this project, a hexagon table is a straight-forward construction process, but you need to plan everything with great care, taking into account all the angle cuts required for this project.

Always invest in the best quality materials you could afford, making sure the components are weather-resistant. Therefore, cedar, pine, redwood or pressure-treated lumber are excellent choices, as they have a beautiful natural finish and durable. In addition, we recommend you to drill pilot holes trough the components before inserting the screws, in order to prevent the wood form splitting. See all my Premium Plans in the Shop.

How to build a hexagon table

Buidling the frame of the table

Building the frame of the table

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame of the picnic table. As you can see in the image, you need to use 2×4 boards and a very good miter saw, as there are many angle cuts that have to be made. Cut the ends of the red components at 60 degrees, while the yellow components should have one gable end, cut at 30 degrees. Add waterproof glue to the joint and insert 2 1/2″ galvanized screws.

Attaching the posts

The next step of the woodworking project is to attach the 2×4 posts to the frame of the tabletop. Cut both ends of the posts at 30 degrees and adjust their size to your needs. Align them at both ends, drill pilot holes through the posts and through the frame and insert 3 1/2″ carriage bolts.

Attaching the 1×6 or 2×6 slats to the frame of the picnic table, using the pattern in the image. In order to create a professional result, we recommend you to cut both ends of the slats at 60 degrees. Drill pilot holes trough the slats and drive 2 1/2″ galvanized screws into the frame. Leave about 1/4″ between the slats and place a piece of plywood, in order to create consistent gaps.

Attaching the bench frame

The next step of the outdoor project is to build the frame of the benches. In order to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to build the components form 2×4 lumber and to lock them together tightly with waterproof glue and galvanized screws. Place a spirit level on top of the supports, to check if they are perfectly horizontal.

As you can see in the image, you need to make several angle cuts, otherwise the components won’t fit together easily. It is essential to lock the components together tightly, using the information from the above diagram.

You should also adjust the height at which you attach the benches to your needs. Nevertheless, you should let about 15″ from the ground to the top of the bench supports. Make sure the supports are horizontal, by using a good spirit level.

Attaching the seat slats

One of the last steps of the project is to build the benches for the hexagon picnic table. As you can see in the plans, we recommend you to use 2×6 lumber and to cut both ends at 60 degrees. Align the slats at both ends, pre-drill the components and inert 2 1/2″ galvanized screws into the frame. Round the exposed edges with a router, if you want to enhance the look of the wooden structure.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. In order to get a professional result, fill the holes and the gaps with wood filler and let it dry out for a few hours.  Check if there are protruding screws and fix this issue, if necessary.

Smart Tip: Apply a few coats of stain or exterior paint to the components, in order to protect them from decay and water damage. Place the table on a concrete slab, if you want to protect the bottom of the posts from water damage.
