This step by step diy article is about how to build a stool. Building a simple stool is an ideal project for amateurs, as you just need to make a few cuts and joint all the components together tightly.

If you want to enhance the look of the chair, we recommend you to cut out the bottom of the legs in a V-shape and to round the edges of the braces. Moreover, drill pilot holes trough the components and insert screws or use a pocket hole system on the inside of the structure. See all my Premium Plans in the Shop.

Building the legs

The first step of the project is to build the two legs of the stool, out of 1×8 lumber. As you can easily see in the image, you should cut the legs in a nice shape, making a small V-shape at the bottom, using a jigsaw or a circular saw. Smooth the cut edges with fine-grit sandpaper.

Smart Tip: If you really want to build a stool with a neat appearance, we recommend you to round the edges with a router and a 1/4” bit.

After building the both legs of the stools, you should make the braces out of 1×3 lumber and lock them into place with 1 1/4” nails. As you should see in the image, we recommend you to round both ends of the braces, using a jigsaw with a sharp blade.

Smart Tip: Next, align them braces and plumb the legs. Lock the components into place with two C-clamps, pre-drill several holes and insert the 1 1/4” nails or screws into place.
