This step by step woodworking project is about 16×16 gable pavilion plans. This is the PART 2 of the 16×16 pavilion project, where I show you how to build the gable roof of the pavilion, step by step. This pavilion has a really nice design and it is also very sturdy. Read the local codes before starting the project, so you comply with the requirements. See my other DIY projects HERE.
We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Building a 16×16 pavilion
Materials

- E – 18 pieces of 2×6 lumber – 133 1/4″ long RAFTERS
- F – 6 pieces of 3/4″ plywood – 48″x96″ long, 8 pieces – 48″x48″ long, 4 pieces – 34 1/2″x96″ long ROOF
- G – 400 sq ft of tar paper, 400 sq ft asphalt shingles ROOFING
- H – 2 pieces of 1×8 lumber – 192″ long TRIMS
- 1 piece of 6×6 lumber – 16′

How to build a 16×16 pavilion roof
Fitting the top ridge
First of all, you need to fit the ridge beam into place. Use 6×6 lumber for the beams itself and for the supports. Fit the supports into the notches and then plumb them with a sprit level. Use metal connectors to lock the supports to the plates. Fit the top beam and then lock it to the supports with l-shaped connectors.
Ridge beam braces
Fit 6×6 braces to enhance the rigidity if the pavilion roof. Make 45 degree cuts to the beams and then lock them into place with 4 1/2″ screws.
Building the rafters
Use 2×6 lumber for the rafters. Mark the cut lines on the beams and then get the job done with a circular saw. It is essential to take accurate measurements, otherwise the rafters won’t fit into place tightly.
Fitting the rafters
Place the rafters to the top of the pavilion every 24″ on center, equally spaced. Use rafter ties to lock the rafters into place tightly.
Side roof trims
Fit the 1×8 trims to the sides of the roof. Align the edges and lock the boards into place with 2″ nails.
Fitting the roof sheets
Cut the roof sheets from 3/4″ plywood at the right dimensions, as shown in the diagram. Fit the sheets to the roof of the pavilion and align the edges with attention. Leave no gaps between the sheets and then insert 1 5/8″ screws, every 8″ along the rafters.
Fitting the roofing
Cover the roofing sheets with tar paper. Install the tar paper starting with the bottom of the roof and make sure the strips overlap for at least 2″. In addition, fit a 12” strip over the top ridge. Install the shingles starting with the left- bottom of the roof, after fitting the starting course. Use roofing tacks to secure the shingles into place.
