6×8 Garden Shed Roof Plans

This step by step woodworking project is about free 6×8 small garden shed plans. This is PART 2 of the 6×8 garden shed project, where I show you how to build the rafters and how to fit them into place. Check out the local building codes, so you comply with the legal requirements when selecting the location and when building the shed. See my other DIY projects HERE.

We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Drill pilot holes trough the components before inserting the wood screws, to prevent the wood from splitting. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a 6×8 garden shed roof

Building the rafters

Building the rafters

The first step of the project is to build the rafters for the shed. Mark the cut lines on the rafters and get the job done with a saw. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to make a birdsmouth to the rafter, so you can lock them into place easily.

Gusset

Gusset

Use 3/4″ plywood for the gussets. Use the left overs from the previous steps, when cutting the floor panels. Mark the cut lines on the plywood sheets and then get the job done with a saw. Smooth the edges flush and then lay them over the joints. Drill pilot holes through the gussets and insert 1 5/8″ screws to secure them to the rafters.

Fitting the trusses

Fitting the trusses

Fit the trusses to the top of the 6×8 garden shed. Place the trusses every 24″ on center and lock them to the top plates with rafter ties. Use a spirit level to make sure the trusses are plumb.

Gable end supports

Gable end supports

Use 2×4 supports for the gable ends. Cut the top of the supports at 70 degrees. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and secure them into place with 2 1/2″ screws.

Fitting the gable end panels

Fitting the gable end panels

Use T1-11 siding for the gable ends. Cut the panels at the right size and shape and then attach them to the gable ends. Align the edges flush and leave no gaps between the panels. Use 6-8d nails to secure the panels into place tightly.

Fitting the overhangs

Fitting the overhangs

Use 2×4 lumber for the overhangs. Align the edges flush, drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them into place. Alternatively, you can make larger overhangs.

Fitting the roof sheets

Fitting the roof sheets

Cut the the sheets for the roof from 3/4″ plywood. Mark the cut lines on the sheets and then get the job done with a saw. Smooth the edges with sandpaper and then align them into place with attention. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws through the sheets into the rafters, every 8″. Leave no gaps between the rafters for a professional result.

Side roof trims

Side roof trims

Fit the 1×6 trims to the sides of the garden shed roof. Align the edges with attention and then use 2″ brad nails to lock the trims into place tightly.

Fitting the roof trims - Front and back

Fitting the roof trims – Front and back

Build the trims for the front and back of the shed roof from 1×6 lumber. Make 20 degree cuts to both ends of the trims and then secure them into place with 2″ brad nails. Leave no gaps between the trims for a professional result.

You need to check out PART 3 of the project, so you learn how to build the door and how to attach the trims to the shed. The trims will really add character to the project, so you need to pay attention to my plans.
