This step by step woodworking project is about free 16×16 gable shed plans. If you need a large shed for your backyard, that is both easy to build a very sturdy, you need to check out these plans. This storage shed has double doors to the front and the roof has overhangs on all sides. Remember that you need to read the local building codes before selecting the right location for the shed and before building the shed. See my other DIY projects HERE.
We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Drill pilot holes trough the components before inserting the wood screws, to prevent the wood from splitting. See all my Premium Plans in the Shop.

How to build a 16×16 gable shed – Floor Frame
The first step of the project is to frame the floor for the storage shed. Cut the joists at the dimensions shown in the diagram from 2×6 lumber. Drill pilot holes through the rim joists and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the perpendicular components. Place the joists every 16″ on center. Align the edges flush and make sure the corners are square.
Fit the 4×4 skids on the selected location of the shed. Lay the floor frame to the skids and align the edges flush. Use rafter ties and screws to lock the skids to the floor frame. In addition, install hurricane ties, if you live in an area with strong winds.
Lay the 3/4″ plywood sheets to the floor frame of the shed. Align the edges flush, leave no gaps between the sheets and then lock them to the rafters, every 8″, using 1 5/8″ screws.
Â
Building the wall frames
Use 2×4 lumber for the wall frames and 2×6 lumber for the double header. Fit a piece of 1/2″ plywood between the double headers for a professional result. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the studs. Place the studs as shown in the diagram.
Continue the project by assembling the side walls for the shed. Cut all the components from 2×4 lumber. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the studs. Place the studs every 24″ on center for a professional result.
As you can notice in the diagram, you need to double the studs that are placed at both ends of the wall frames. Fit 1/2″ plywood between the double studs, for a professional result.
Assemble the back wall for the shed from 2×4 lumber, using the same techniques as described above.
Â
Fitting the siding sheets
Cut the panels for the front wall of the 16×16 shed from T1-11 siding. Mark the cut lines on the sheets that go around the double door opening and then attach them into place with 6-8d nails. Align the edges flush and insert the nails every 8″, along the framing.
Fit the T1-11 sheets to the sides of the 16×16 shed. Align the edges flush and secure them into place with 6-8d nails.
Fit the siding sheets to the back wall of the shed, as well.
You need to check PART 2 of the 16×16 shed to learn how to build the gable roof. In addition, in PART 3 of the shed project, I show you how to build the double doors and how to attach the trims to the front and sides.
This 16×16 storage shed is large so it provides a lot of space for storing tools, furniture and other items.
