Building a Gable Carport Roof Plans

This step by step woodworking project is about building a gable carport roof plans. This is PART 2 of the single carport project, where I show you how to attach the roofing and how to take care of the finishing touches. If you live in a windy area, make sure you reinforce the structure with cross braces. In addition, install hurricane ties. My plans come with step by step instructions and you can easily adjust all the dimensions to suit your needs. See my other DIY projects HERE.

We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Drill pilot holes trough the components before inserting the wood screws, to prevent the wood from splitting. See all my Premium Plans in the Shop.

How to build a gable roof for a carport

Building the rafters

Build the rafters for the overhangs. Use 2×6 lumber and a miter saw. Smooth the edges with attention.

Building the overhangs

The next step is to assemble the front and the back overhangs for the single car carport. Drill pilot holes through the rafters and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the blockings. Place the blockings equally-spaced for a professional result.

Fitting the overhangs

Fit the overhangs to the front and to the back of the carport. Align the edges flush, drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them into place.

Fitting the roof sheets

Cut the sheets for the roof from 3/4″ plywood. Take accurate measurements and then secure the sheets to the rafters, every 8″, using 1 5/8″ screws. Leave no gaps between the sheets for a neat result.

Building the trims

Use 1×8 lumber for the front and back roof trims. Make the angle cuts to the trims and smooth the edges with attention.

Fitting the trims to the carport

Fit the trims to the roof of the carport and lock them into place with 2″ brad nails. Attach the 1×8 trims to the sides of the carport, as well.

Fitting the roofing

Cover the carport roof with tar paper and then install asphalt shingles. Make sure you install drip edges and a ridge cap, so you seal the roof in a professional manner.

Gable Carport Plans

Last but not least, you need to take care of the finishing touches. You have to pour a slab for the carport and then finish the carport. Fill the holes with wood putty and smooth the wood surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of paint or stain over the components to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the project.

Single Carport Plans

This carport with a gable roof is large enough for one car. The large roof with generous overhangs is ideal for a car, as it will protect it from rain and excessive sun.
