FAQ

Hey there! My name is Jack and I run HowToSpecialist. Here are some answers to commonly asked questions about me and my projects. I will update this list as you send more questions!

I am new to woodworking. Can you help?

Nice to meet you! I was a beginner at some point, as well. Woodworking is not scary, but you need a good mentor to get you through the basics. Therefore, I have compiled a detailed guide that covers the basics (safety tips, tools for woodworking, wood and finish recommendations, etc…) to ease your transition from the couch to the workbench.

Are your plans printable?

I’ve added a FREE PRINT button for you! If you don’t want to go for the premium plans, no worries—you can still download my plans by clicking the PRINT PLAN button. This will generate a PDF file. If you’re serious about building my projects, I highly recommend going for the Premium Plans. They’re super detailed and will make your build a whole lot easier. Happy building!

To get PREMIUM PLANS, just hit the Get PDF Plans button at the bottom of the page. Keep in mind, you’ll need to pay to get access to the PDF file. Once you download the plans, they’re for PERSONAL USE only! Sharing or posting the plans on other websites or distributing them to third parties is strictly forbidden and can lead to copyright issues. When you buy the plans, you’ll get the Premium Version, which is ad-free and packed with extra goodies. Thanks for supporting my work, and happy building! I collaborate with MyOutdoorPlans.com to create Premium plans for you, so you can find my best building ideas HERE.

Do plans come with Cut and Shopping Lists?

Yes, most plans have detailed Cut & Shopping lists, at least the newest ones. I also try to update older plans and add what’s missing to make them simple to follow and beginner friendly. As you can see in the image, the A, B, C… list is the Cut List (how to cut the lumber) and the list below that is the Shopping List (what you need to buy for the project).

When are new projects posted on the site?

When I first started this blog, back in 2011, I used to write articles almost everyday. I was so passionate about sharing my ideas that as soon as I had a sketch I hit the PUBLISH button. Afterwards, I taught myself how to use Sketchup (3D drawing software) and I started designing my own plans. Now, I have decided to spend more time on the projects and focus more on quality rather than on quantity. That is why I try to post a new project tutorial, that includes plans and detailed pictures, every week, usually on Sunday, or at least free plans.

What software do you use to create the plans?

I use Sketchup Pro.

Do you make custom plans?

I really like receiving feedback from my readers so I encourage you to share your ideas with me. However, it is impossible to create plans for any size out there, so I hope you understand if sometimes I cannot help you. However, I add the best suggestions to my to-do list.

Are your plans stamped?

No. If your town asks for stamped plans, then you need to work with a local engineer.

Can I build projects using your plans and sell them?

YES! Nothing compares to the feeling I get when I see your projects built using my plans! If you can make a few bucks using my plans, that’s even better! My main goal with HowToSpecialist is to help others and make a difference in the world! Don’t forget to show me a few pics with the projects by sending them HERE!

What tools do I need for building projects?

Generally speaking, if you are a beginner to woodworking and you just want to test the waters, you can get the basic tools you need under 150 $: a drill, a circular saw and an orbital sander. With these tools you can build most of my projects, as you will be able to cut the components, drill holes and insert screws, and finish the projects. The other tools I recommend are basically improved or specialized versions that will give you more accuracy and help you save time. See what tools I use and my recommendations HERE.

Who is running HowToSpecialist?

My name is Jack Sander. Well… not exactly. Jack is my alter ego, the pen name I use online. I hope you don’t mind, but I value my privacy a lot, so I prefer to keep my real name under wraps (the pictures of me are real, though). If you want to know more about me and my story, check out the About Page.

I’m not looking to become an online celebrity or public figure. I just want to be the passionate idealist working to make the world a better place, without seeking credit for the effort. That’s why I’ll keep all my plans free for an indefinite period of time. I personally answer all your questions and do my best to help you out, so feel free to send me emails.

I don’t expect any thank-you emails. The greatest satisfaction for me is seeing you save money or discover the joys of DIY projects! Happy building!

Is HowToSpecialist your full time gig?

No. Just a quick note to let you know that this site only makes enough money to cover the hosting and other expenses. Any extra funds go straight back into buying materials for new projects and upgrading my tools. That’s why I’ve got other income streams to support my family and my other hobbies. Thanks for being part of this journey with me!

Have you considered making project videos?

Yes, I have, but I won’t do it just to join this “youtube maker movement” train or to make a few more bucks. I will record my DIY projects when I feel this is the right creative direction for me and when I can truly add more value for my readers.

How can I support HowToSpecialist?

If you like my work you can support me in a few ways. First of all, I would appreciate you to like and share my work on the social media networks (Facebook, Google +, Instagram, Youtube, Pinterest). Secondly, you should send me a few pics with the projects once you are done building!

Check out the Store, where you can find Premium Woodworking Plans, so you can starting building projects, have fun and save tons of money. The Premium Plans come in a PDF Download format and provide more benefits compared to the regular ones, including cut diagrams and cost estimates.
