This step by step diy project is about how to build a wood crate. If you want to learn more about building a wooden crate for your fruits and vegetables, pay attention to the instructions. This project is ideal for any kitchen, basement or it can be used as decor. I teamed up with Julian from MyOutdoorPlans for this project. You can see the step by step plans here.

You should always plan everything from the very beginning, in order to prevent costly mistakes and to save time. If this is your first project, you need a friend to give you a hand when assembling the wood crate. Invest in high quality lumber and plywood, as the components will be exposed to bad weather. Protect the components with appropriate paint or stain.

There are a few tips that you should take into account, if you want to get a professional result. Therefore, take accurate measurements and use professional tools when making the cuts or when drilling pilot holes. Align the components at both ends and add waterproof glue to the joints, if you want to create a rigid structure.

How to build a wood storage crate

Cutting-the-boards

Cutting-the-boards

The first step of the project is to cut the components at the right dimensions. I used 1×12 boards for the sides and 1×4 slats for the bottom and sides. Make sure you smooth the cut ends before going to the next steps. In addition, you can adjust the dimensions to suit your needs.

Next, I marked the lines for the finger holes. You can adjust the size of the holes according to your needs. I will make them 1″ high and 4″ wide.

I used a hole drill bit along with my drill machinery. Don’t apply to much pressure when making the holes, otherwise you will end up damaging the wood. Alternatively, you can get the job done quicker and more accurately using a drill stand.

Next, I marked the rest of the cut lines. Use an L- square and a pencil to get accurate marks.

I used a jigsaw to make the cuts. After cutting the finger holes, we recommend you to smooth the edges and the inside thoroughly. Work with attention and check if the finger holes are smooth enough for use.

Before attaching the 1×4 slats to the sides, I applied glue to the edges. In this manner, the joints will be sturdy.

Align the edges with attention and clamp the components together tightly. Insert 1 1/4″ brad nails making sure you leave at least 1/4″ from the edges, to prevent the wood from splitting.

Attach the opposite slat to the bottom of the wood crate. Make sure the edges are flush before inserting the screws, to get a professional result.

Afterwards, center the middle slat and lock it into place with 1 1/4″ brad nails.

Next, I attached the slats to the sides of the wood fruit crate. I installed the top slat first, to make sure everything will be aligned properly.

I attached the rest of the slats to the sides of the crate, making sure the gaps are as even as possible.

The wooden crate is almost completed and it already looks pretty awesome. It needs more sanding, as the edges are rough and a few coats of stain. If you are going to use the crate for storing fruits of vegetables, make sure you choose an appropriate product.

The crate has a very rustic appeal to it. I think I will make more and use them as storage shelves. This is one of those projects that are quick, fun and give you endless options.

Last but not least, I applied walnut stain over the components. If you want to build this crate, see the step by step plans with measurements here. Julian did an amazing job with these plans, so don’t forget to check his projects out. I would love to hear your feedback and to see your pins and likes.

Smart Tip: Apply a few coats of stain or exterior paint to the components, in order to protect them from decay and water damage. Check out the rest of the projects to see more alternatives.
