Building the frame of the corner bench

Building the frame of the corner bench

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame of the corner bench. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the legs out of 2×2 lumber and the supports out of 1×4 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and secure them to the legs using 1 1/4″ screws. Make sure the corners are square and leave no gaps between the components.

Fitting the front support

Fitting the front support

Build the front support out of 1×4 lumber, making sure you cut both ends of the component at 45 degrees. Fit the support to the frame of the bench and secure it into place using 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth.

Fitting the middle support

Fitting the middle support

In order to add rigidity to the frame, you should fit a 2×4 middle support to the frame of the bench, as in the diagram. Cut one end of the support at 45 degrees, as in the plans. Drill pilot holes and secure the support to the frame using 1 1/4″ screws.

Fitting the backrest supports

Continue the project by assembling the backrests. Use 2×4 and 2×2 lumber to get the job done in a professional manner and drill pocket holes at both ends of the components. Align the supports with great care and secure them to the legs using 2 1/2″ screws. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth.

Fitting the balusters

Next, install the 2×2 balusters to the backrest of the corner bench. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock the balusters into place. Make sure you place the balusters equally spaced, every 5 3/4″ on center. If you cannot adjust balusters to 10 1/2″ you should use regular square 2×2 balusters, although the end result won’t be as dramatic.

Building the seat

Building the seat

Build the seat out of 3/4″ plywood. Mark the cut lines on the plywood sheet and get the job done with a circular saw. Smooth the cut edges with fine-grit sandpaper and remove the residues before staining the corner bench.

Attaching the seat

Attaching the seat

Attach the 3/4″ plywood piece to the frame of the seat, as shown in the diagram. Make sure the edges are aligned with attention and leave no gaps between the components. Use glue and 1 1/4″ finishing nails to lock the component into place tightly. Smooth the edges with fine-grit sandpaper.

Fitting the finials

Fitting the finials

In order to enhance the look of the corner bench, we recommend you to install finials to the top of the legs. Center the finials into place and secure them tightly using 1 1/4″ brad nails and glue.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. In order to get a professional result, fill the holes and the gaps with wood filler and let it dry out for a few hours. Check if there are protruding screws and fix this issue, if necessary.
