How to build a peaked rood arbor
Â
The first step of the project is to build the side trellis for the peaked roof arbor. Therefore, lay the 2×2 components on the level surface and place them equally-spaced. Drill pilot holes through the horizontal components and insert 2 1/2″ screws to create rigid joints.
Â
Â
The next step of the project is to attach the side trellis to the 4×4 legs of the arbor. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to drill pilot holes through the horizontal trellis and to secure them to the posts using 2 1/2″ screws.
Â
Â
Setting the posts in concrete is essential for the rigidity of the garden arbor. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to dig 3′ deep holes and to pour 2″ gravel on the bottom. Install the tube forms to the holes. Secure the posts with braces before filling the forms with concrete.
Â
Â
Build the support beams for the  arbor out of 2×6 lumber. Take accurate measurements and get the job done with a circular saw. If you want to get a professional result, we recommend you to cut both ends of the rafters in a decorative manner.
Â
Â
Clamp the support beams to the top of the posts, after making sure they are perfectly horizontal. In addition, drill pilot holes through both the beams and the posts. Insert 5 1/2″carriage bolts to lock the components together.
Â
Â
The next step of the outdoor woodworking project is to build the peaked roof. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to cut both ends of the rafters at 45 degrees. Fit the rafters to the support beam, drill pilot holes and insert 3 1/2″ screws to create rigid joints. In addition, lock the rafters together by inserting 2 1/2″ screws, after drilling pilot holes.
Â
Â
If you want to add character to the garden arbor, we strongly recommend you to fit decorative trims to the roof. Use 1×4 slats and cut the ends at the right angles, otherwise they won’t fit into place easily.
Â
Â
Fit the trims to the roof of the arbor and align the edges with great care. Drill pilot holes through the components and insert 2 1/2″ screws to get the job done in a professional manner. Leave no gaps between the components.
Â
Â
One of the last steps of the project is to attach the 2×2 trellis to the peaked roof. Adjust the size of the components to suit your needs, drill pilot holes and secure them to the rafters using 2 1/2′ screws.
Â
Â
If you want to add character to your garden, this wonderful arbor might be the project that will change the paradigm. Remember to plan everything before starting the project, as it will be easier to make any necessary adjustments to the design and dimensions.
Â
Â
Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. In order to get a professional result, fill the holes and the gaps with wood filler and let it dry out for a few hours. Â Check if there are protruding screws and fix this issue, if necessary.
