Before starting the actual construction project, we recommend you to plan everything, as to save money and to keep the costs under control. Adjust the size and the design of the media towersr to suit your needs. In addition, we recommend you to invest in high-quality materials, such as pine, redwood or cedar, as they have a nice finish and are highly durable, especially in a humid environment.

It is essential to invest in high quality materials, that are also water-resistant, such as pressure-treated lumber. Cut the components at the right size by using a circular saw and smooth the cut edges with a sand block. Don’t forget to ask a skilled friend to assist you during the project, especially if you don’t have a large expertise in the field. You need someone to hold the components into place, while you drive the screws in.

Building an entertainment center tower

Building the sides

The first step of the project is to build the sides of the storage towers. Build the legs out of 2×2 lumber and the panels out of 3/4″ plywood. Drill pocket holes along the vertical sides of the panels and secure them to the legs by using glue and 1 1/4″ screws. Leave no gaps between the components and check if the edges are flush.

Fitting the side trims

Build the trims out of 1×2 lumber and secure them to the sides using finishing nails and glue. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth.

Fitting the supports

Build the horizontal supports out of 2×2 lumber and drill pocket holes at both ends. Fit the supports to the structure and secure them into place using 2 1/2″ screws and glue. Make sure the corners are square and leave no gaps between the components.

Fitting the partitions

Build the partitions out of 3/4″ plywood and drill pocket holes along the four edges. Fit the components to the structure and secure them to the frame using 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth.

Fitting the shelves

Next, build the shelves out of 3/4″ plywood and drill pocket holes along the side edges. Fit the shelves to the structure and secure them into place using 1 1/4″ screws.

Building the top

Build the top of the tower out of 1×2 lumber, 1×3 lumber and out of 3/4″ plywood. Drill pocket holes along the sides of the plywood sheet and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the trims. Add glue to the joints and leave no gaps between the components.

Fit the top component

Center the structure of the tower to the top component, as described in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the components and insert 1 1/4′ screws into the top component. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth.

Attach the back

Build the back out of 1/4″ plywood and attach it to the back of the structure using finishing nails. Add glue to the joints and make sure the edges are flush.

Building the doors

Build the frame of the door out of 1×3 lumber. Cut the components at the right size and smooth the cut ends. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal components and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the vertical components. Add glue to the joints and use a router to make 1/4″ x 1/4″ rabbets on the interior face of the door, as described in the diagram.

Fit the glass panels

Fit a piece of 1/4″ glass to the door and lock it into place using clips.

Fit the door

Fit the door to the entertainment tower center and secure them to the sides using appropriate hinges. Fit handles to the door to open and close them easily. Select a design that matches the style of the rest of the furniture.
